Abstracts:

Using Metadata as the Control Panel for MDM

David Loshin

All aspects of coordinating the information management aspects of an enterprise initiative such as master data management require a clarified view of the "data about the data" that is used within the organization - its metadata. Metadata management can be used as a control mechanism to develop a model, framework, and architecture providing a unified view of master data objects across applications. The metadata management needed for any enterprise migration differs from the relatively simple data dictionary-style repositories that support individual applications, and there is value in looking at a conceptual view of master metadata that starts with basic building blocks and grows to maintain comprehensive views of the information that is used to support the achievement of business objectives.

In this discussion, we provide a view of these seven levels of metadata that are critical to master data management, starting from the bottom up:

1.        Business Definitions
2.        Reference Metadata
3.        Data Element Metadata
4.        Information Architecture
5.        Data Governance Management
6.        Service Metadata
7.        Business Metadata

Process Orientation for Data Management Professionals:
Using "Process" to Gain Support

Alec Sharp

Organizations everywhere are once again looking at their business processes - undertaking Business Process Redesign, adopting Six Sigma methods, or getting into Business Process Management. This is great news for data management professionals with skills in the business process arena. That's because our goal may be improved data and information, but experience has shown that focusing on business processes is a great way to get the attention and support of the enterprise. This session introduces techniques for working on process-oriented projects, and is packed with practical frameworks and tips to get you off to a successful start. It touches on all phases of a project, including introducing business process concepts, discovering processes, scoping and assessing the target process, modeling the as-is process, and designing the to-be process. Throughout, we'll illustrate the interaction between process and data perspectives.

Specifics include:

*     The lessons of history - the rise and fall and rise again of process re-engineering
*     What people think a process is, what a business process really is, and how to discover them
*     Why some of our beloved data management approaches and frameworks can work against process orientation
*     How to make processes visible and the need for improvement compelling yet blame-free
*     Proven presentation techniques for getting management attention
*     Why process modeling begins before you begin process modeling and how process modeling is different than data modeling, and the methods that work

Tech Presentation:
A Visual Tour of Data Governance

Arka Mukherjee

Governing corporate data environments is becoming increasingly difficult. Human resource constraints, cost-cutting priorities and ever increasing complexity are forcing Enterprise Data Managers to do more with less. Our presentation shows how a corporate data governance program can be sustained over time by focusing on demonstrable business value and visual outputs that can be shown to executive leadership. In our talk, we will present a gallery of visual outputs that can answer key questions related to data governance. Members of the audience will be encouraged to ask similar questions within their own business contexts.
