Abstracts:
Structuring Your Data Governance Program
to Align With Your Organization's Unique Needs
Gwen Thomas
Yes, all Data Governance and Stewardship programs have certain things in common. Yes, there are core
competencies and skills that must be brought to any such effort. But no - it is NOT possible for new
or maturing Data Governance programs to be all things to all people.
So how do you decide what to focus on, and then how do you decide the best way to structure your
program to make you successful? How do you "do the most with less" while delivering unambiguous
business value? How do you align your efforts so that business needs that feed effortlessly into data
requirements, which align perfectly with data management and IT deliverables? How do we enable our
data stakeholders so they are able to express their information needs, have a voice in cross-functional
decision-making, be able to review policies, standards, and other data-related rules, and know who is
accountable for meeting their needs?
This session looks beyond generic good practices to describe a set of steps you can take to determine
how to get the most bang for your Data Governance and Stewardship buck. It mixes theory and best
practice with real-life stories about companies whose data governance and stewardship efforts have
made a significant difference in meeting their unique organizational missions.
Attendees will learn
o The essential components of any data governance and stewardship effort
o How to use a framework to get buy-in, support, and enthusiastic participation
o Different models for stewardship, and the training and tools to support each model
o Steps for getting started (even if you have no budget), and then maturing your program
o Best practices for scoping and funding your efforts (and traps to avoid)
o How to embed data governance and data quality into business, data management, and IT processes
o An approach for measuring the ROI of your efforts
Governance for Master Data Management
Malcolm Chisholm
Master Data Management (MDM) is essential in today's age of data integration. But it is not just a
question of tools and techniques. Without governance, MDM programs easily falter. This presentation
reviews the special governance requirements of MDM, with a focus on a principles-based approach. Such
an approach can be implemented with less disruption than a rules-based approach. Metrics are
implemented in a framework of results-based management (RBM) to track the success of the
principles-based MDM governance program. The need to build supportive processes and infrastructure is
also discussed. Some of these directly assist stakeholders, while others are used to prove compliance.
The special MDM problems of identify management, trust and survivorship, definition of physical data
values, data trusteeship, and standards management are a backdrop to all these considerations.
Attendees will learn:
* The major characteristics of Master Data that require governance
* What a principles-based governance approach for MDM involves, and how it differs from a
rules-based one
* How to implement metrics to track a governance program
* How to set up processes and infrastructure for an MDM governance program.
Case Study:
How to Implement a Successful Data Governance Program
Michele Koch
Sallie Mae has a strong Data Governance Program in place to support enterprise initiatives such as
building a customer information system. Over the last three years, we implemented a series of
foundational steps and then deployed a Data Governance Program.
In this case study, attendees will learn:
" The "non-traditional" Data Governance approach Sallie Mae used and the benefits of that approach
" How project members narrowed the list of many thousands of candidate data fields to a manageable list of enterprise fields to be governed
" The approach that inspired business users to volunteer their expertise
" How this project paved the way for implementing formal Enterprise Data Stewards as part of Sallie Mae's new Data Governance Program
" Sample communication tools
" Key lessons learned
" How data profiling is enriching the Data Governance Program
Vendor Presentation:
Continuous Data Governance for Complex Data Landscapes
Arka Mukherjee
Data Managers and Data Architects are increasingly being pulled into data governance. Is "Data Governance"
just another rehashing of existing data management activities, or is it a new area of competency which
needs new skills and new areas of expertise.
In this presentation, we will provide our perspective of what data governance looks like within complex
data environments. The focus will be more on implementation aspects of data governance, and the controls
that need to be established. We will identify the barriers that need to be overcome in order to implement
continuous monitoring and governance of the information landscape.
Vendor Presentation:
Extending the Reach of Governance to the Mainframe
James Cerrato
With over 1 trillion lines of COBOL code executing the world's most mission critical business
functions, legacy applications will continue to play a major component of any corporate governance
strategy. Through the advent of approaches such as SOA and BPM, it has become clear that legacy
applications must become an easily referenced, accessible and most importantly, an understandable
component of a business' overall governance program. The Adaptive Legacy Code Manager allows you to
discover your legacy code, analyze code and application artifact relationships and import this
information into the Adaptive Metadata Manager to further define the semantics and stewardship of
the legacy code resulting in key business benefits including reduction in training costs,
formalization of modernization strategies and adherence to governance and compliancy mandates.
Come hear Adaptive's 'quick start' approach to achieving the business benefit by leveraging these
capabilities through Adaptive's Software as a Service offering.
